Through the Offenburg town forest

Hiking time about four hours (there and back)

From the Town Hall walk west along Kornstrasse until you arrive at the "Vinzentiusgarten" (St. Vincent's Garden); turn right there and walk along the old battlements through Kittelgasse to the "Ölberg" (Mount of Olives). This niche building in the form of a Gothic chapel was built in 1524. Starting from the right we see the Disciples Peter, John and James and behind them the praying Jesus. In front of the background of a contemporary town the bailiffs are approaching. The Mount of Olives is regarded as Offenburg's most valuable monument of art. The crucifix in the church square beside the Mount of Olives reminds one of the former graveyard situated there. The crucifix was probably made by Andreas von Urach in 1521. The present sculpture is a copy made by the Elder Peter Valentin.

Now descend the "Max-Wenk Stairs" into the Zwinger park, turn right, pass the playground and walk on to the end of the park, turn left there and walk through Wasserstrasse past the butchery and the power station to Freiburger Strasse. Cross that street and ascend the Kinzig embankment. Turn right there and walk on to Heinrich-Hertz Strasse via the "Kinzigsteg" (footbridge over the Kinzig River). Turn right there, walk on to Max-Planck Strasse and follow that street to its end (bus stop Bosch Telecom). Take the subway underpassing the express way and continue your walk on the foot path until you come to Wilhelm-Röntgen Strasse, cross that street and walk on until you reach the intersection of Wichernstrasse/Marlener Strasse. At the beginning of the woods in Marlener Strasse enter the wood, walk past "Spitalhof" (forester's house), turn right at the dog's cemetary and walk straight on to the edge of the wood. The foot path follows the edge of the wood until you reach a lane; follow this lane to the left for about 150 m, turn right there and follow the overgrown wood path until just before the autobahn. Turn left there and walk on until you reach the main path, pass the former "clay holes" to the left until you .reach the next intersecting lane, turn to the right there and walk to Marlener Strasse and over the autobahn bridge; turn right about 300 m behind the bridge into the wood following the broad lane. Turn left after about 600 m and walk on until you reach the hut with the beehives; turn right there (do not walk on to Marlener Strasse) and walk on the woodland path until you reach the broad gravel path. Turn left there and cross the expressway (L 98 to Goldscheuer) at the forest carpark.

Now follow the broad forest lane until it turns left. Continue your way straight on along the ditch on the rough woodland path. Then follow a smaller ditch to the right and you will soon reach the hardsurfaced forest path at the edge of the wood.

There you find the "Rheinaue access lane" (blue St. Andrew's cross).

Follow this sign to the left and walk on past "Tiefkeller" through the subway underpassing the autobahn to Wichern Bridge. Cross the bridge and you will be back again at the beginning of the town forest.

From there the way leads you back into the town center.

You may also take the bus back into the town center at the stop "Marlener Strasse" near the Kaufland supermarket (which you can also reach by bus from the town center).
