Badische Weinstraße - Schwarzwaldhochstraße

Tour of about 200 km

Your tour begins at the Town Hall in the centre of the town. Drive first through Grabenallee and Ortenberger Strasse in the direction of Ortenberg. Just before the end of Offenburg turn off left to Fessenbach and you will reach the "Badische Weinstrasse" (Wine Road of Baden) after about one kilometer.

At the "Traube" restaurant at Fessenbach turn left and drive to Durbach via Zell-Weierbach and the picturesque wine village of Rammersweier. From Durbach the road continues - going up steeply - via Bottenau and down again until you reach Federal road no. 28; turn to the right there and drive in an eastward direction; after some kilometers you reach Oberkirch. In the town centre the road branches off left to Kappelrodeck, the area where the famous red wine is grown, and take you down to Sandweg, Achern/Obersasbach, Lauf, Neusatz, Hub, Waldmatt, Kappelwindeck, Altschweier, Affental. Driving through the foothills of the Black Forest covered with vineyards you will soon reach Eisental. Passing through Eisental the "Badische Weinstrasse" takes you to Neuweier (worth visiting is the "castle of Neuweier") and then to Steinbach past the vineyards to the "fruit garden of Baden". Coming from the south you now arrive at Baden-Baden, the famous spa. Sights worth visiting there are the Stiftskirche, the large ruin of Hohenbaden, the new castle, the ruins of the Roman bath, the casino, the Spielbank (gambling casino), the drinking hall, Lichtentaler Allee, the monastery of Lichtental and other places.

From here drive an through the suburb of Lichtental on Federal road no. 500 and climb through the woods on the steeply winding road past the "Helbing Rock" (viewpoint with a beautiful view) over the crossroads at "Schwanenwasen" (664 m) to "Bühlerhöhe", where a casino and a sanatorium are situated. A short distance further up the hill you find the "Plättig Hotel" (777 m). Continue to drive on the mountains of the Northern Black Forest. The road passes "Kurhaus Sand", runs round the "Mehliskopf" (1009 m) behind Sand and takes you to "Kurhaus Hundseck" (884 m) presenting many beautiful views of the Rhine valley.

Now to the left of the road the mighty "Hornisgrinde" - almost 1200 m hight - appears. At the foot of the highest mountain of the Northern Black Forest is the "Mummelsee".

The Schwarzwaldhochstraße now runs up and down the hills, passes the "Seibels-eckle" and takes you to the recreation centre "Ruhestein".

From there drive up the slope of the "Vogelskopf" (1056) in a wide bend and follow the winding road with magnificent views over the plateau to the carpark "Schliffkopf".

A few kilometers behind the carpark the old Kniebis road joins the Mountain Road. On your way downward you pass Kurhotel "Kniebis-Lamm", drive through the Forbach Valley and come to Freudenstadt.

The town is a health resort due to the curative properties of its climate and a winter resort. lt has a square old part built by Duke Friedrich I. of Württemberg in 1599 that is worth seeing-especially the town church built from 1601-1608 with two naves meeting at a right angle - one for men, the other for women only. And each nave also has its own tower.

Follow Federal road no. 294 to the south. Drive through the Valley of the Kinzig to Alpirsbach. The place founded in 1095 as a monastery has a remarkable basilica with a Romanesque groundplan and Gothic decoration (high altar in the northern side chapel). Follow the valley of the Kinzig to Wolfach, once the centre of rafting timber in the Black Forest. The town hall, the mighty upper town gate and the Fürstenberg castle with the museum of local history and culture are worth seeing.

From Wolfach the tour takes you on to Hausach and Haslach and on Federal raod no. 33 via Steinach, Biberach to Gengenbach. Here you should make a stop by all means. The old part of the former Free Imperial Town is now classified as a historical monument. Venerable houses of wealthy citizens and impressive half-timber houses, narrow lanes, towers, fountains, gates and the town wall make a tour of the town really a romantic experience. From Gengenbach return to Offenburg via Ohlsbach and Ortenberg.
