Zwinger Park (9)
One of the most beautiful municipal parks in Middle Baden is the Zwinger Park situated below the town wall between Wasserstrasse and Hauptstrasse. The park with its beautiful trees, gardens and ponds with water birds was created in 1899. The Wenk Stairs link the Zwinger Park with the town centre. They were built in 1908 and are named after their donor.
Ölberg (Mount of Olives) (10)
From the upper platform of the Wenk Stairs there is a direct path to the Mount of Olives. The niche building in the form of a Gothic chapel was built in 1524. Starting from the right we see the Disciples Peter, John and James and behind them the praying Jesus. In front of the background of a contemporary town the bailiffs are approaching. The Mount of Olives is regarded as Offenburg’s most valuable monument of art. The crucifix in the church square beside the Mount of Olives reminds one of the former graveyard situated there. The crucifix was probably made by Andreas von Urach in 1521. The present sculpture is a copy made by the Elder Peter Valentin.
Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche (Holy Cross Church) (11)
The first building of the Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche dates back to the 13th century. lt was completely destroyed in the town fire of 1689. On the old foundation walls the present church was erected under the influence of the Vorarlberg Architectural School (Franz Beer, 1660 – 1726, and Leonhard Albrecht, 1671 –1734). The church has a dominant three-storey tower. The nave is divided into three aisles by rows of pillars. Old walls can be seen in the Gothic choir. The high altar was created by Franz Lichtenauer in 1740. The left side choir called Josefs-Chörlein (Joseph’s little choir) houses a Renaissance crucifix dating back to 1521. Through Kittelgasse (former battlements) you arrive at
Vinzentiushaus (St. Vincent House) (12)
The former patrician house was built by Josef Freiherr von Ried, field marshal of Empress Maria Theresia, in 1764. Since 1884 it has been the seat of Vinzentius-Verein-AG, the society for the care of the old and sick. The Vincentiushaus also has a picturesque garden above the town wall with a wrought-iron Rococo gate and sandstone sculptures.
