Where is Offenburg?
The town is situated 20 kilometres southeast of Strasbourg, at the foot of the Middle Black Forest. The Kinzig River connects the foothill area with the plane of the Rhine River. The town with its approximately 59.000 inhabitants is situated idyllically between vineyards in the east and fruit trees in the southwest.
How old is Offenburg?
According to legend, the town was founded by the legendary King Offo. It is documented that the town was mentioned in a document for the first time 850 years ago. The roots of the town, however, reach back into the period of Emperor Nero. The Romans used to build castles along the Rhine River then - supposedly also where Offenburg is today.

From Strasbourg, Goethe wrote the following about Offenburg and the Ortenau region: "In no other country, the sun shines brighter and the sky is bluer than here between the River Rhine and the vineyards."
What expects me in Offenburg?
The famous Baden food. It is served in cosy inns, idyllic places where home-grown wines and agricultural products are offered, and in restaurants of international format. The Ortenau is a Mecca for gourmets - the wines care for the rest.
What can I visit in Offenburg?
The fire in 1689 only saved the Capuchin Monastery. The inhabitants of Offenburg, however, built up their town in an even more beautiful way in the 17th and 18th century. The baroque Town Hall of 1741, for example, the neighbouring King's Court of 1806, as well as the Jewish Bath of the 14th century are worth to be visited.
How do I reach Offenburg?
Nothing more simple than this. Offenburg can be easily reached on the motorway from Basle to Karlsruhe (A 5). And ICE trains from Hamburg, Hanover, and Basle stop in the Offenburg Railway Station daily.
